My students first discussed the map and made connections! Then they commented on how much took place in the very first chapter. It quickly got the readers attention.

We discussed how similar we felt to Salva in many ways, especially about looking forward to getting home after school. We also noticed he was the same age as many of us, too. There were many differences, of course. Aside from the shooting, we noticed that Salva had more responsibilities than most of us.

We never thought about his responsibilities. We agree he definitely had a lot more responsibility than we have. We would be interested to see what it would be like to have to look after a herd of cows all day.

Salva and I are both alike because we both have to learn a new language that we are not that familiar with and we both daydream in class.we are different because he has to sit with his legs crossed on a bench and i cross my left leg under my right leg on a chair. we are different because i get to go to school all year around unlike him.

Salva is different from me because in his culture the woman do not go to school they stay home and cook and clean. The men go out to work and go to school. And in my culture i started school young and he started at 10.

Salva is eleven years old. He started school at the age of 10. I have been in school since I was 5 . We both know multiple languages but I speak the same one at school and home. Salva had to herd cows and hunt for his food. I get all my food from a grocery store. We both are good students that like to daydream.

What I learned about Salva's life and culture is that He started to go to school when he was 11 years old.Salva has siblings 2 brothers and 1 sister.Women and girls do the cooking and the house work and the boys go to school and do the work.In the novel it was also talking about that Salva's dad is very succesful and rich and also talked about that Salva's dad has many wifes. In my culture we start school when we are young and Salva starts when he was 10 years old.

I learned that Salva started school at 10 years old. He is a great student , he daydreams just like most students. Salva is only able to go to school on rainy days because on dry days they move. - The family. My life is different than salva because I started Kindergarten at 4 years old because my birthday is late. But , I am a great student , I try to get all A's and B's. I go to school all year round. Also, it's different because I get to go to school and they don't.

We learned that Salva's life is very different from what we know. We have never had to experience a war happening out side our school like he had to.There are some similarities like we both go to school and sometimes we don't pay attention to our teacher either. We also think about being at home sometimes during the day.

We found many similarities and differences between our lives and Salva's. One similarity is that we both go to school, but a difference is that we start at different ages. He started at 10, but most of us started Preschool when we were 2 or 3. Another similarity is that we both walk to school, though some of us get to school by car or bike which is different. Some of us also daydream while we're in school. Also, it seems that Salva's community is unsafe which is a big difference because our community feels safe. A big difference is that Nya has to walk to get her water, but we can just turn on a faucet and have clean water! Also, they both have more life important responsibilities, or chores, than us.
