Why doesn’t the group want Salva along? Why is he ultimately taken along by the man and woman? How do you feel about the fact that the group is willing to isolate and reject him?

They didn't want to take Salva along because he might slow them down. They ultimately took him because he was a Dinka. I feel mad and sad that the group was willing to leave him behind, he could have died.

They don't take Salva along because it is another mouth to feed and because they thought he was a Neur. He was taken along because he was Dinka which was their tribe. We feel upset and angry that they would leave Salva to starve.

The group didn't want to take Salva along because, as a child, he would be slower, possibly complain, wouldn't be able to do tough work, and he would require some of their food. He is ultimately taken in by the group because he is a part of the Dinka tribe. The woman who accepted him into the group was being compassionate because she probably understood that Salva could starve and die if they didn't take him in. We think that the man and woman maybe lost their own child, and seeing Salva made her think about him or her and how they'd like others to treat their child. We understand why the group wouldn't want to accept him. They want to survive and their survival instincts are kicking in. While we understand, it makes us feel sad because his life is at risk, and he will only survive with help. It also disappoints us that an adult who has the ability to relate to Salva would pass him by. Also, kids look up to adults, so the adults aren't setting a good example.

I think that they don't take him along because he will take up time and they don't know him well enough.

In my opinion the last chapter was very interesting. I feel that the fact that they would block him out is very rude but, I know why, it because when the man and the woman took him in the other people in the group were not to happy because they were shrugging there shoulder and in the background they were saying how it is a bad idea. My prediction is that when salva tells them about the honey they will be thankful and happy with him and then he will be accepted in to the group.{Hannah}

Students felt bad for Salva's situation. They could understand why the group hesitated to take him. They realized that it was a tough choice because of his age and their lack of food. The students thought that Salva would be useful and would be able to do real work such as gathering food because he is young and has a lot of energy. They agreed that he should be taken because he was Dinka too.

The group may have hesitated to accept Salva because he came with a woman from another tribe. They may have been suspicious of the older woman. Why was she handing him off?It is a time of war and it is difficult for people to trust each other.They may have also been wary of Salva's health because younger people are susceptible to disease.
