The Akobo Desert is the worst element yet because it is incredibly hot and dry. It doesn't contain water or food and it covers a great area so it takes a long time to cross. The dilemma Salva faced is at the end of the chapter. He must decide whether to give the dying men some of his water to help them survive or to keep the water for himself because he needs it for his own survival. Two of us in our class would choose to give Salva some of our own water, but the rest of us said that they would choose to keep the water to themselves. The two who said they would give the water to the men said they'd give the water to the men because they would feel guilty if they did not. They said that at least they would die knowing they were kind. The rest of the class explained that they would keep the water for themselves because they likely would die without it. They felt this was the right choice because it's a matter of life and death. They would want to live and see their families again. A couple students also argued that giving the water wouldn't help anyone survive. Giving some away could ultimately end in both dying. We can't wait to hear how other students would handle this dilemma.

After the students finished reading about the trek through the Akobo desert they were conflicted about giving water to the men and struggling to make a decision. Many students realize the harsh conditions and worried that giving the men the little bit of water they had could cause them to dehydrate. On the other hand, they imagined what it would be like to be the men in the desert. They could understand both sides of the story. In the end the majority of the students decided that helping the men was the right thing to do. Ms. Waldinger LCMS Warminster, PA
