Nya’s purpose of her journey is to get away. If I have to endure a similar experience I’m not sure I could do it. Even though, it was only 2008 i live somewhere where everyone has a phone and we spend all day on them. Nya lives in South Sudan where they have trouble getting water, much less an iPhone. I would be much more active and I would understand what it’s like for people in poverty. (Grade 7, Bloomfield CT)

We have a pond near our houses and it would take 5 minutes to walk there. In the winter we would have to chip away the ice on the ponds and or rivers. After we get the water you have to boil it for 3 minutes before we can drink it. We wouldn't be able to go to school, sports or have fun with friends because we would be too busy looking after the water and trying to get it to be drinkable.

Nya’s journey is a very long and painful one. We think that she must do this journey daily in order to provide water for her family to cook and clean with, as well as to drink. Our life would be different because we might not be able to go to school, we would have less time on social media, watching T.V. or playing on the computer. Also, we would have to deal with sunburns, cuts and bruises and we would not be able to sleep in as much as we do now.

Nya's journey is a big hardship. She has to make a long trip to get water, and when she fills up her gourd, she has to carry the heavy water back home. Also, there are thorns by the water and she gets cut as she collects it. There is a lot of responsibility on her because her family needs this water to survive.

Our class discussed the differences and similarities between their lives and the lives of Salva and Nya. They recognized that they have a lot more freedom to do what they want and not as much responsibility in regards to chores. Their chores take less time and are not as difficult. They also recognized that it seemed as though Nya's basic needs were not being met as well as Salva's. His mother meets him at home with a bowl of milk, whereas Nya must travel by herself for hours just to retrieve muddy water from a pond used by other people and cattle. We wondered about Nya's family; does she have parents or smaller siblings to care for? Students realized how much they take for granted and how lucky they are to have easy access to clean fresh water whenever they want it.

Nya is an 11 year old girl. She lives in a small village called Sudan. She has to walk a very long time to get some water. I walk to my school every day. It's not a long walk. It's like a 15-20 minute walk from my house to school. If I had to walk every day for water, I'd probably fall to the ground and cry. I don't know how Nya does it everyday.

If I was Nya I would have to get my water from my pond at my house, then I would have to go to my house and boil my water for 10 minutes! Then in winter, I would have to break the ice. I would have to repeat that every day, maybe more than once a day. I would not have time for school or any other privileges. I would have to work all day every day.

Each day, Nya had to walk 8 miles a day to get water from the pond and back. Since I have a water bottle with me at school, I would have to walk 8 miles to get water for school. My life would be so different because we wouldn't have water at school or at my house when I turn the tap on. I wouldn't be able to get water at school or at my house either.
